what ever happened?

Family shocked

Nowak’s family released their statement from their home in Rockville, Maryland.

“Lisa is an extremely caring and dedicated mother to her three children. She has been married for 19 years, although she and her husband had separated a few weeks ago,” the statement said.

“Considering both her personal and professional life, these alleged events are completely out of character and have come as a tremendous shock to our family,” the statement said.

“We hope that the public will keep an open mind about what the facts will eventually show and that the legal system will be allowed to run its course.”

NASA wants to know if there are ‘lessons to be learned’ – CNN.com.

NASA grounded Nowak for 30 days on Tuesday.

Michael Coats, director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, issued a statement saying Nowak “is officially on 30-day leave and has been removed from flight status and all mission-related activities.”

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event. The charges against Lisa Nowak are serious ones that must be decided by the judicial system,” the statement said. (Watch how police say a NASA love triangle went awry Video)

A NASA spokeswoman said Wednesday that Oefelein had flown to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and was cooperating with investigators

starting and going on

IMG_2089I have mentioned but not made a constant topic that I am renewing my piano playing…to what purpose at this moment I am not sure and therein lies one of my current worries.  I really want to find a way to make a living in/with/by music but …. well… how?

One of the results of last year’s medical crisis is that I will not go willingly back to corporate America – to be honest I would rather work at Starbucks (and may have to at some point) or waitress or… i dont know . but pretty much anything.

I actually studied quite seriously for many years and have two degrees for it (undergrad and diploma); but then I took a fork and pursued another branch of music for a number of years and then was wooed to the corporate life and well, then here I am.

I have been working away on my own in spurts – I was doing really well before the Village Sister’s new baby came (and with her nanny away for the first two weeks, I wanted to help) and then the beginning of Jan had that bad week of respiratory whatever and then I got back to work and then the week of my nephew’s bdays and the N Mexico sister and bin-law visiting and .. well at least I am back at it again.

I am planning to buy a used car next week (FINGERS CROSSED) and then I really need to find a teacher – at this point I am feeling very isolated with my music … not that I can’t teach myself  the notes, etc (I once had a teacher say “I know you will show up with the notes and rhythms etc learned and we can get to work from there) – and to be honest I miss my lessons – its been such a part of my musical life in all pursuits that I really miss that connection.  I miss music school too but well, that’s another thing all together.  I mean I started playing at three and taking lessons shortly after.

A coach/teacher would be helpful and to guide where I can realistically go at this point.   A masters? and a doctorate? (cause you need both pretty much to do any university work) or just be the local neighborhood piano teacher?  I am DYING DYING DYING to play chamber music….would love to work with a trio regularly… ah dreams!  sigh.

well I am going to figure out how to get some of them to happen – just still stumbling in the dark (and with a wonky computer keyboard that keeps putting spaces where they dont belong – argh)

IMG_1926Its funny how all of a sudden I am “feeling” my apartment and this location – i know that sounds weird – but up to recently I had been settling in and now – well, its probably because this winter is the SECOND – I have gone thru one full year here and now am in the “second” winter, etc.  Up to this season, each season brought something new in terms of how the climate would be (be needing a/cs for the summer, fans for the spring and fall and portable heaters for the winter) and dealing with the inevitable fallout of settling in – it had been many years since I had moved and I had forgotten how long it takes to develop new routines and places to put things and just getting to know the place and how to move around in it etc  (make any sense?).

But how it relates is getting used to practicing – first its a baby grand and I have only ever had upright or consoles.  Its a whole other animal and so much more fun to play.  Of course, this is not mine – mine is STILL at the piano builders – I call and they say we need a few days to work on it and then I call back a few days beyond when they said and its the same thing.  Hmm maybe I should just drive up there and see what’s up!  (its barely an hour away).

Oh dear, I am all riled up with all of this– probably cause of the Brahms I worked on today and then Renata Tebaldi and Tucker and Warren’s TOSCA tonight on SIRIUS.   Hopefully it will look better in the morning.

LHL cd from Wigmore Hall recitals

From Wigmore Hall

We are delighted to announce the release of two more new CDs on our Wigmore Hall Live label, both are available to order now priced at just £9.99 each (plus 50p postage & packing).

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson performs songs by Mahler, Handel and Peter Lieberson

Following the tragically early death of this remarkable singer we are delighted to release a recording of one of Lorraine Hunt Lieberson’s best concerts at the Hall. Recorded in 1998 this recital features songs by her two ‘signature’ composers – Mahler and Handel, and also songs by her husband Peter Lieberson, who took much of his inspiration from her exquisite voice. This CD is not only our heartfelt tribute to a lady who touched everyone who heard her, but is also a must for anyone who looks to be moved by the music they hear.

Shura Cherkassky performs works by Chopin, Liszt and others

Recorded in 1993 this CD epitomises all that Cherkassky was renowned for – his prodigious talent, idiosyncratic interpretations and unfailingly thrilling performances. Featuring works by Rameau, Chopin, Liszt, Hindemith and Lennox Berkeley it shows why Cherkassky is fondly described as the last of the great Romantics. This CD is a must-have, not just for piano aficionados, but for anyone likes to be taken on an exciting and enjoyable journey in the comfort of their own home.

“Dating tips for knitters”

From the delightful wonderful TECHknitting blog:

You've read the blah, blah, blah advice a hundred times–make a gauge swatch before you start knitting your garment. Wash the gauge swatch. Dry the gauge swatch. Measure the number of stitches and number of rows per inch to be sure you're getting the same gauge as the pattern calls for. Adjust to smaller needles if you need to get more stitches per inch, larger needles for fewer stitches per inch. Blah, blah, blah.

If you do all that stuff, congratulations–you are a sober, mature person with whom it would be a honor to shake hands–a beacon, a knitting role model. You're all set–no need to read further–read a different blog for today.

Back here in the real world, there's a ball of yarn screeching to be knit, and a pattern demanding to be started NOW. You know you shouldn't, but sister, you know you're going to do it anyway–grab the needles recommended in the pattern, cast on, and hope for the best.

It's a classic in philosophy–what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object? What happens when your irresistible desire to start NOW smacks up against the stone-cold fact that, without a gauge swatch, you're most unlikely to actually accomplish that flattering, graceful garment in which your imagination clothes you? Will you stop and reconsider? Will you actually make a gauge swatch? Maybe–but if you're still reading, I'm not laying money on it.

So, how shall you tame the mighty urge?

stalled

bullets tonight:

  • I am stalled on the EZ Tomten Jacket for Berkshire Nephew as I need the arm length measurements to finish the sleeves.
  • I need to redesign the Fireman sweater
    • and put it in Knit Visualizer and then print out and
    • knit a new swatch (a circular one this time ) and get gauge and
    • then re plot and
    • then calculate from the “fav’ sweater measurements.
  • so I am working on my aran – the ‘Welcome back Friend’ by Kathy Zimmermann.

cold…

For the third time since the first of the year i have a runny nose, congested trying to be a sinus infection.  The first one turned into an awful sinus infection.  The second one only just made it to the infected stage before it whimpered away.  This one is hanging around just being a really congested sinus passage but with a lot of liquid and netti pot seems to be stuck there.

I had been taking just sudafed pe (or whatever the one is you can buy without signing for it) and advil but today after three days, gave up and took a Claritin.  Well, that seems to be helping much more than I had expected.  Although I hate the buzzy feeling I get with an antihestimine when I don’t have any hestimines to fight – although I wonder.

We had such an unusually warm Dec and Jan and I remember reading somewhere (blog, paper, ?) that the incidence of spores and molds was unbelievably high for the wintertime when they are usually killed due to the temperature drop.

So I wonder if what I have been fighting these last six weeks (its been a two week recurrence pattern) has been really allergies?

I am going to keep on the Claritin and see if that helps.  I certainly am tired of the congestion and my poor nose is red and the cold sore on my upper lip isn’t nice either!

on other news… here’s a shot of the backyard on Saturday morning after our “little” snow fall on Friday night.  At least it snowed BEFORE the cold snap so we have something pretty to look at in the COLD!

oh and the programmable thermostat was working MUCH too well.  As its on the interior wall of the Music Room which is the front room in the layout of this railroad apt – it faces DUE WEST and gets all the breezes from the Hudson River – so it was working very nicely and hard to keep the room at 60 but that meant the Back of the apt (where I am the rest of the day when not practicing the piano or sleeping in the bedroom which is next in the layout) was nice and toasty .  And then I checked my gas meter – yikes!  way too much gas was being consumed for my budget consciousness – so I set the thermostat to 58 from 8 am – 10 pm and 55 from 10 pm to 8 am  .  And when I practice I just turn on the lovely ceramic pedestal heater that sits near (not next to) the piano and close the door and i am warm and toasty while playing) and can keep  my gas bill down.

from the writing front lines…

Oh, and by the way, on my way home from the coffee shop today I heard Garrison Keillor’s Writer’s Almanac, a great little show. Today he was talking about Andrew Greeley, a Catholic priest who has written more books than God. I particularly liked the following snippet:

“Greeley has now written more than 150 books, which have sold more than 15 million copies. When asked how he can write so much, he said, “I suppose I have the Irish weakness for words gone wild. Besides, if you’re celibate, you have to do something.”
