christmas preparations

Click for M084200 - Flip Stick DetailsWent to BBB on Friday and got all my christmas shopping done – each sister and her family is getting a knitted object and then each is getting the same item (to be revealed later).

Momma wanted something very specific and I found it and it was on sale!.

And also bought the Dirt Devil Stick Vacuum shown at the left – i have a supercharged very powerful upright vacuum which I did a lot of research for last year – but its too heavy and too wide to really use in my very narrow apt.  So for $40 buckaroos this is perfect.

Used it for an hour this afternoon – vacuuming everything in sight – emptied the dust cup FIVE times – just dont ask when i last vacuumed (and i have two cats and lots of throw rugs.lots.)  Hopefully after this massive cleaning, once a week should be easier.  But its still easier than the big one.

ok. back to christmas knitting.

Knitting on the Net

Not Your Mother's Knitting – How Traditional Crafts Change for the Internet

Creative Knitting Taught Online: Photo courtesy BPC on FlickrCreative Knitting Taught Online: Photo courtesy BPC on FlickrKnitting is a centuries-old skill, traditionally passed from one generation to the next within families and small communities. After learning by example the basics of knit one, purl one, apprentice knitters pick up more advanced techniques like decorative stitches and buttonholes by imitating

So what’s a lone knitter in Malaysia to do? Knitters have gone online; of the many corners of the Internet, the immense knitting blog network is one of the liveliest and coziest.

Along with a general rise in the popularity of knitting in the past few years, the Internet has seen a proliferation of knitting blogs and other online resources like video tutorials and webzines dedicated to the craft. Blog rings, like knitting blogs, can include a loose association of blogs from Nordic Knit Blogs (for Scandinavian aficionados of the craft) to Christian Knitters (for the born-again knitter). Hundreds and sometimes thousands of bloggers — connect online because of their passion for knitting.

quick

Just a quick note during a practice break – worked on the baby cable cardigan sweater for quite a few hours last night – its about 5 inches by now so am feeling a little better about the time line.  photos later tonight.

Also will try to make booties and maybe a cap – well see how much i can get done!  And then of course looking thru my baby books i found other sweet patterns  especially in Erica Knight’s SIMPLE KNITS FOR CHERISHED BABIES – maybe a Chunky Knit Cardigan?   or Rosebud Cardigan?

ok back to work.

Updates

IMG_1566

These last few days have been all about decorating and preparation – here is a link to my other blog with all the news about the decorating (outside) and the dilemma of how to decorate inside.

SO onto knitting .

Knitting for BabyFinally decided what to make for a shower present (my sister) this sunday – yeah thats right.  This.Sunday.  I have a baby blanket already made, but wanted to add a sweater – found a cable cardigan pattern in the KNITTING FOR BABY book by Falick and Nicholas.  Theirs is knit in cashmere and in separate pieces.   So of course I am knitting it in the round with a steek for the front (the band is added at the end in their pattern as well).  And will steek the armholes. So other than THOSE changes …it should be fine.  Went stash shopping and found a gorgeous kelly green Rowan 4ply wool yarn that was languishing as a shawl and ripped it back (only about 10 inches).

STOP THE PRESSES – I actually knit a GAUGE SWATCH!  yes, I am amazed too.  But you know, I dont have a lot of time for mistakes – and guess what – i got gauge and i was even a needle size up already (5 instead of 4).  So i cast on last night (I am making the 6 mo size ) and got about an inch done before I started falling asleep .

Today I woke up late and feeling punky – queasy and icky – and it didnt go away all day – so i ended up doing lots of computer stuff – emails, cleaning up inbox, a lot of little stuff (updating some programs) and tried the new online version of my bank – ARGH NO MORE direct connect from QUICKEN and the qfx file is not recognising the current account – wants to create a new one.  So will deal with that another day – i am not in the mood today.  BUT its a MAJOR.ANNOYANCE.

anyway, off to make some sausage and risotto for supper – somehow, my appetite is not affected with whatever this is just my energy and feeling lousy.  Tomorrow its supposed to be really rainy.  Good day to do a lot of knitting in between practicing and housework.  And to stay indoors.

POOR YARN HARLOT!

I would SUE my webhost– see her blog (you have to go the “regular” way as her feeds are down.  Best wishes to getting back up soon!

The Blog is Down

It will be back up again soon, due to the fantastical cleverness of Ken, who not only explained the problem to me in a way I can understand but has kept me from smashing things or explaining my frustration to the webhost people in unladylike and counterproductive terms. Here – in terms I understand – is the problem.

Apparently, when we bought a very big closet from the webhost (our webspace with 1000MB of space), the builders may have neglected to mention that we are only allowed to hang 12 blue shirts in the closet (We can only have 100MB of mysql database storage). Unfortunately, all of our shirts are blue (Movable Type only uses mysql database storage for its whole operation) and although we are allowed to hang as many other kinds of things up as we want… pants, jackets, silk blouses and ties, really, we got this closet to hold our extensive blue shirt collection (This blog).

When the builders (the Webhosts) realized that we were trying to hang up the 13th blue shirt (another blog entry) they decided to put a one way door on the closet (Permission denied). We can take anything we want to OUT of the closet (deleting) but we can't put anything new in (Posting). They want us to either take some of our old shirts out (archives) or buy a really, really, really huge closet the size of your house (Dedicated server).

Alagna vs La Scala vs Zefferiilli vs Bolle vs ?

If you are following the Alagna fiasco in Milan, it’s now spilling over to the ballet!  (Wonder if a backlash will soon start to pity Alagna – probably not)

Roberto Bolle, Italian ballet dancer, friend of La Cieca and wearer of gilded thong – as well as the most titillating attraction at the current Verdi’s Aida at Teatro alla Scala – is extremely displeased at Alagna’s recent slam towards him that was reported earlier on Opera Chic.

Alagna had earlier told the press that he was very perplexed as to why Roberto Bolle, who danced a very short (but thrilling) pass during the Act II Marcia Trionfale, received applause as big as his gigantic codpiece during the curtain call.

Well, Opera Chic has just heard from a reputable source that Bolle has been overheard earlier today at the theater grumbling and slamming Alagna, sneering that Alagna has committed “professional suicide”. Ouch. Oh Bolle, I love you and your snark. And your golden glistening th0ng.

Alex Ross: The Rest Is Noise: The Mozart never stops

The Mozart never stops

When I was writing about Mozart earlier this year, I heard rumors of a massive project, funded by David Packard of the Packard Humanities Institute, to place online the master’s complete works. Confirmation was lacking at the time, but, via the nicely redesigned ArtsJournal, I’ve learned that the rumor is now reality: the Digital Mozart Edition is operational.
