Finally an Austen we Love!

Starting this Sunday, the Jane Austen Series on the Newly Titled Masterpiece CLASSIC! is showing the “definitive” version of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.

Thank goodness!  After these past few weeks of tomfoolery with the plots and subplots and what have you , it will be a delightful pleasure to luxuriate in the faithful interpretation of this production.

Although I do Love Garson and Olivier in their very flawed production – you can just sense they are straining to make some sense of it – still they are a most well matched pair as of course are our two in the photo above!

This novel is my top favorite of all of Ms. Austen’s and I love them all.  I have much in common with the heroine – and more than most readers!  (can you guess?)

Its the one book I read every year and of which I never tire!

Hugh Grant does Dalgliesh

This week’s BBC 7 newsletter arrived today with this interesting bit of scheduling:

Cover Her Face
Hugh Grant stars in Cover Her FaceHugh Grant stars in this 1993 adaptation of the PD James thriller, first published in 1962. Called in to investigate a murder at an Elizabethan manor house, Inspector Dalgliesh soon discovers that there is no shortage of motives. As he investigates, the complex secrets and powerful passions of village and family life come into play. Dramatised for radio by Neville Teller and directed by Matthew Walters, it also stars Sian Phillips, Beatie Edney, David Thorpe, Oona Beeson and Melanie Hudson.
Tuesday to Friday at 9am, 8pm and 1am

Now I am HUGH PD James fan – and also a big fan of Roy Marsden’s interpretation of the Inspector Dalgliesh – have all of his essays into the role that were filmed (except DEVICES AND DESIRES which is for some unknown rights reason not to be transferred and the VHS copies on EBAY sell in the triple digits sigh).

As an addicted BBC7 listener (and hoader of) I have collected several of the Robin Ellis* versions of the James’s novels… but this is a new one on me!    (*also available on Audible.com)

I will definitely be tuning in to Listen Again to this one!  Should be very very interesting!

Windows Live Writer

Today, we’re proud to announce that Windows Live Writer 2008 is now available!

Download Writer 2008
Windows Live Writer 2008 (version 12.0.1366.1026)

Writer Zone: Windows Live Writer: Out of Beta

I started using this program this week. It is a very user friendly program – I like MOST that you can compose your new posts in the ACTUAL TEMPLATE of your particular flavor of blog program.

Lots of other goodies including EXTREMELY easy Photo adding (including a very good hook into FLICKR and great resizing tools).

I have used Blogjet, ecto, Performancing (Firefox) and many others over the years – pretty much tried them all.

I also tried Rocketpost last night but it is VERY CPU intensive and I discarded it.

I give Windows Live Writer Four and a half Stars – the only thing missing is Minimize to the Sys Tray…. but well, I can handle the taskbar space for the many pluses of this VERY easy to use program.

The Kindness of Strangers

 Gertrude Jekyll and Knitters!

This has been one of those weeks to feel blessed by the women  of my knitting groups.  It's such a joy to be with others as excited about knitting and crazy enough to understand the NECESSITY of buying MORE needles/yarn/books or whatever right now!

The monthly group celebrated its one year anniversary in January and it has grown to a good size of lively, intelligent, interesting and intriguing women.

Sometimes I just stop -  listen and observe the different simultaneous conversations – and witness the helping and sharing and knitting and laughing and all that goes on.

The weekly group is also growing (a new member this past week) and also growing closer – of course with a smaller group comes more chat and sharing (its been about six months for this group).

And I never leave a gathering without having learned something! Today A showed me how to add a bead with a crochet hook and J shared the Icord cast on method; both things I have had on a list of things to learn – and now they can be crossed off!   [Just 4236 to go!]

Of course there is the sharing of projects and books – finally drooled (almost) over one of the lovely Japanese pattern books that everyone has been raving about all over the internets – oh dear me! I see a few of those in my future! And a lovely sweater from one of them was shared by one of our very accomplished members!   (photo when I upload)

So many of the projects take my breathe away! Its always interesting to see what everyone is knitting!  We have several designers who take my breathe away with their exquisite projects – one a lace expert meeting.

We were joined this week by a knitter who found us on Ravelry  – I admire her courage in venturing forth to the unknown – – of course she is lovely and is a great addition amongst us. And another lovely knitter showed up at the monthly meeting by way of the announcement on our host’s board.

Doors and windows opening…

Walkuere

I missed the live broadcast Saturday- the monthly meeting of my Knitting Group met in the morning followed by a little chat with a couple of the gals at the new local cafe (Black Cat); then its was on to my mother’s to help watch my 6 year old nephew while his parents attended the matinee of HAPPY DAYS at BAM.

I did manage to sneak in a little listen at the beginning of Act Two and the last 15 mins of Act Three… but once I came home – after watching an extremely emotional episode of Law and Order SUV (the one where Stabler’s very pregnant wife is in a car crash with Olivia) I came to the computer for a little email and blog reading and found myself starting the recording.

and well, then it is 4 something o’clock in the morning… and that glorious fire music has just died away.

This has always been one of my Favorites of the Ring – and the cast was pretty good – Morris of course I admire in this role – such humanity he brings to Wotan (well he is the only Wotan I have seen live so I guess I am a bit prejudiced but still I really like his interpretation of this role).  Lisa Gasteen as Brunhilde was fine – I thoroughly enjoyed the all important final scenes with Wotan – and while she was a little squawky on top sometimes – well, I’ll take a little of that to hear the opera.  Ms Voigt was incredible as is expected nowadays and Ms deYoung in top form as well.

I will need to listen a few more times to discern Maazel’s interpretational details… I am very accustomed to Maestro Levine’s readings.  I did hear a little bit of the opening night on Sirius; this performance sounds a bit more relaxed and balanced and less frenetic than that.  I am sure the Orchestra was more settled as well – not many other conductors have a chance at Wagner in the Met house with that orchestra.   [I think I heard a BOO in the conductor’s bows…but it wasn’t that loud so am not sure.]

On the whole I was impressed with the timbre of the sound and the arc of the pacing of the opera…more as I listen several more times.
