Life goes on in London and NY

Poppies on the Mall

Telegraph | News | We will remember them

Ironic isn’t it that the terrorist attack took place between two celebratory events for England?  Winning the Olympics 2012 location and then the commemorative celebrations of the end of WWII.

Life does indeed go on – even with the juxtaposition of horror with a commitment to the future and a memorial to the past.

Not much knitting this weekend between the terrorist aftermath and the pre-show jitters for Dennis – even though we don’t have our house on Santa Rosa Island anymore, I still am pulled into the watching and waiting and wallowing in the constant broadcasting.  Now that it is over and there is a LOT less damage than feared, we can resume our regularly scheduled knititng.   Also spent much time this past weekend revamping and continuing to refine my blogs – and rediscovered Blogjet (Yahoo!) which will make blogging SO MUCH EASIER!!!!  Thank you Blogjet (am I the last person to find it..?)

Rebus fans..

Vice1_111Link: Scotsman.com News – Ian Rankin & Rebus – Craggy Ken gets measure of Rebus role.

FILMING of a new Inspector Rebus series has begun with Ken Stott playing Ian Rankin’s grizzled detective. Edinburgh-born Stott will be playing the hard-drinking Rebus, whose unconventional policing methods are set against the backdrop of the Capital’s criminal underbelly.

Rankin is one of my most favorite Mystery writers… and its good to hear that they are replacing Hannah (who was much too wimpy although an eyeful to look at) for the role of Rebus.  Too bad that they cant refilm the series – oh well.

London a haven for terrorists?

Two stories NOT in British papers nor NYT:

Scotsman.com News – Top Stories – Terror suspect: MI5 asks for deportation.

Terror suspect: MI5 asks for deportation by BRIAN BRADY AND EDDIE BARNE

THE hunt for the London bombers dramatically switched to France last night after MI5 and Scotland Yard demanded the extradition of a "North African" terrorist suspected of involvement in the murderous attacks.

Detectives have made the formal request to French colleagues for the
extradition of an Islamic radical who is believed to have fled across
the Channel after the bomb attacks.  The name of the individual is not yet known, but sources say he is
of North African descent, and is high on a list of potential terrorist
masterminds drawn up in the hours after Thursday’s atrocity. The
revelation offers a further indication that the attacks – which police
sources believe will claim at least 70 and up to 80 victims – were
perpetrated by a North African terror cell.

The revelation over the French request intensifies concern that
Britain has become a haven for radical Islamists from around the world,
spurred on by what critics claim are lax immigration rules, a poorly
resourced intelligence service and ‘soft-touch’ human rights laws.

Washington Post:  In London, Islamic Radicals Found a Haven

LONDON,
July 9 — On the morning after bombs ripped through the London
Underground and crumpled a double-decker bus, four security guards
escorted a one-eyed, Egyptian-born cleric, his arms amputated below the
elbows from Afghan war injuries, onto the elevated dock of Courtroom
No. 1 in Old Bailey, the capital’s principal criminal court.

Abu
Hamza Masri, for years a blood-curdling preacher at a North London
mosque allegedly visited by shoe bomber Richard Reid and hijacker
trainee Zacarias Moussaoui, listened silently Friday as his lawyer
argued about his indictment last January on nine counts of incitement
to murder for speeches that allegedly promoted mass violence against
non-Muslims. In one speech cited in a British documentary film, Masri
urged followers to get an infidel "and crush his head in your arms, so
you can wring his throat. Forget wasting a bullet, cut them in half!"
