To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

Bizarre thing.
Hard to tell from the photo (where it looks like a lot of poop but you will have ruled that out already), but if these are very tough and fibrous (difficult to break) but have a powdery coating and white inside, they may be the fungus “dead man’s fingers” (Xylaria polymorpha). It grows on old / dead wood, either from old tree parts below the surface or perhaps from spores on the mulch.

thanks for this… its not powdery – just crumbly and pretty much disintegrates. i am going around and mixing it with the mulch. and not watering as much this week to see if that makes a difference.
