NASA grounds shuttle fleet

NASA today grounded the space shuttle program while engineers determine the effects of debris falling from Discovery during blastoff, the agency said. It is not clear whether any debris actually hit Discovery or the extent of any impact. Discovery took off Tuesday — the first shuttle launch since the 2003 Columbia disaster — with a battery of cameras installed watching for falling debris, the cause of Columbia’s disintegration on re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Domingo leads Bayreuth?

Domingo Wants to Conduct at Festival By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Filed at 9:05 a.m. ET July 26th

BERLIN (AP) — Placido Domingo would like to conduct at the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth. ”I have already sung there, so why should it not be possible to conduct?” Domingo was quoted as saying in an advance copy of Focus news magazine, on newsstands Monday.

The 64-year-old tenor told the magazine he planned to conduct performances in other opera houses of Wagner’s ”Lohengrin” and ”Die Walkuere” before taking on the epic ”Ring des Nibelungen.”

”I am working more and more as a conductor. Why not in Bayreuth, too?” he was quoted as saying.

RIP Susan Lydon

Former columnist Susan Lydon dies
By Katherine Pfrommer, STAFF WRITER

from The Oakland Tribune

Susan Gordon Lydon, a founding editor of Rolling Stone and a former Oakland Tribune columnist, died July 15 in Florida after a long battle with cancer. She was 61.

Ms. Lydon was a talented writer who authored three books and contributed to numerous publications over the years, including Ramparts, the Village Voice, the New York Times Magazine and The New York Daily News.

She returned from London's mod scene to a Bay Area in the midst of the cultural revolution in the 1960s. After stops in New York, Minnesota and Boston, she eventually made her way to Oakland.

"My mother was a fierce, powerful and brave woman," said daughter Shuna Lydon of San Francisco. "She lived a life so rich with truth and warmth there are few who do not feel forever in debt to her friendship and companionship."
