If you haven’t had enough of Wagner today ….

On VOX today, at 6 pm – a special repeat  of the Solti Meistersinger with Ben Heppner, Rene Pape, Karita Mattila, & Jose van Dam from 1997

Its spectacular – heartily recommend it – Van Dam’s interpretation of Hans Sach is quite moving and the rest of the stellar cast (also who you heard today on Lohengrin!)

Just make it the Ben-Rene-Karita marathon Saturday!

VOX does Robert Shaw tribute Sunday

Ch_classical_vox_smFrom an email from Robert Davis:

“Robert Shaw would have been 90 years old Sunday, and his impact on the world of choral music made him one of the holy pantheon here on VOXWe’ll have another in our six-hour special series Sunday morning dedicated to Shaw–all of these pieces have been requested lately, by the way–and Tuesday we’ll reprise our first Maria Callas special, continuing our pledge to remain true to the Golden Age voices and core repertoire we also honor (and get fussed at if we vary too far!).  Also for our choral buffs, another Baroque great is born this week (May 2, 1660)–Alessandro Scarlatti. We’ll have an opera on Sunday Baroque, a major choral piece Monday and Tuesday mornings, and a special six-hour block for Thursday Evensong.”

Robert Shaw Special: (Sunday Apr. 30th, 6 am; Monday 6 pm; Wed night midnight):
–BACH: St. Matthew Passion. We had a lot of comment about this recording during our Bach tribute; it is back when Shaw was working with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus (and featured the girl’s choir of the Cleveland Heights High School Glee Club!), and is part of a special release package from the Cleveland Orchestra.
–BRAHMS–Sieben Abenlieder. Here is the maestro with his own Festival Singers–who did more for this perfect repertoire?
–ORFF–Carmina Burana. Happily settled into Atlanta, here are his forces in all their glory.
–DVORAK: Stabat Mater.

Schedule for week
Sunday Baroque (begins noon eastern): In honor of his birthday week, Alessandro Scarlatti’s Griselda; and one of Handel’s most successful operatic efforts, Orlando.

Monday A.M. (begins at 6 am eastern)–We begin (and is THIS timely) with Alessandro Scarlatti’s treatment of the story of Mary Magdalene, La Maddalena.

Tuesday A.M. (begins at 6 am eastern)–For this morning’s look at Scarlatti, we hear the recent and very beautiful recording with Nicholas McGegan’s Philharmonia Baroque of The Vespers of St. Cecilia. And if you haven’t heard the latest King’s Singers album Sacred Bridges, stay with us around 9:30 am eastern–it’s settings of Psalms by 16th century composers like Sweelinck and Goudimel and their link to music from the Holy Lands with Ali Ufki and the Saraband Ensemble.

Big Ticket Tuesday (noon eastern, Friday at 6 p.m.)–In Memoriam Maria Callas–two of her greatest La Scala triumphs, the 1955 La Traviata and the 1957 Il Trovatore (both with Di Stefano);  plus arias from 15 other operas showing the enormous range of her artistry.

WAITING OVER!

Friday’s mail

Letter001

Do you see what I see?

Letter003

YES it is THE LETTER!!!!

Letter004

Tears flowed.  Cats ran from the room (they are not sure what’s up when the human emits water).  Exclamations of joy were uttered.

Going to Knitting Camp is a VERY GOOD THING and is very needed right about now.   Even Martha would approve (i am sure).

And a call was made – Lovely Eleanor at that mecca, Schoolhouse Press, graciously ignored my blurbing on and on – apparently they are used to knitting fools at this time of year.

[I already got accepted so I can make a fool of myself now ]

[and there is a little time to calm down   … its not til the beginning of July.]

Now to check out travel – from my little village on the Hudson to the middle of Wisconsin.

Oh dear!

And there’s homework!

What fun!

And the countdown begins…

waiting….

ok, i am not by nature a patient person… this is hard. really. hard.

i am waiting to hear if i was selected for this – Meg Swansen's Knitting Camp.

for years, i thought of going and would get the postcard (you know the one that was sent in like january) and pin it up in a very visible place – like on my computer at work – and then each year i wouldnt send the application in .

why?

probaby cause i was scared of not being good enough = probably .

but this year, this year – i said i would do it .  i promised myself that i would send it in – this is the year that i made big changes – remember – i moved to this little village, left park slope and my little tiny apartment to a small railroad apt (well, at least there are more than two rooms).  and had my ear surgery.  and well, if i was that brave – surely i could be a little bit more brave to compete the application.

and I DID!

Even handed it to my friendly postman  – who is so nice especially since i get lots of packages (you know, ebay and all) and magazines (well, what can i say i love magazines ) – on April 6th.  and told him how precious that letter was!

and
now
i
wait

the website and application say we should hear by may 1… thats MONDAY.

nothing in the mail yet….

hope springs eternal.

Knitting:
Thu_squares001 completed another square for Warming Grace and half way thru another one .  these are addicting!  i have two humongous projects – a shawl and shrug – that seem to not want to end  and had forgotten what it was like to do little projects.    they are reviving my knitting spirit greatly.

and i get so anxious when thinking of knitting a sweater for me – even though i am going to plunge in this weekend – i have to get over this insane fear of it not fitting – i know how to measure etc. and i have some really gorgeous yarn to use.Thu_squares002
