This weekend’s listening choices

First, you really owe it to yourself if you are a Wagner fan to listen to the Tannhauser and Lohengrin rebroadcasts from this year’s Bayreuth Festival… see here for times and stations on Saturday at Bayreuth on Operacast 

but you also should hear the Paris Opera Wagner Tristan und Isolde – its an incredibly vibrant performance from all involved including Salonen who keeps a taut rein on the whole team – on KBYU at 130 pm  with Ben Heppner (Tristan); Waltraud Meir (Isolde); Jukka Rasilainen (Kurwenal); Yvonne Naef (Brangäne); Franz-Josef Selig (King Mark) and the excellent Paris National Opera Chorus and Orchestra   (See Saturday on Operacast)

Then there is the early Mozart  "Mitridate, Re di Ponto" from this year’s Salzburg Festival…Richard Croft (Mitridate), Netta Or (Aspasia), Miah Persson (Sifare), Bejun Mehta (Farnace), Ingela Bohlin (Ismene), Andrew Tortise (Marzio) und Pascal Bertin (Arbate). and then there is the Beethoven: FIDELIO from Carnegie Hall last year with Leonore: Deborah Voigt, soprano; Florestan: Thomas Moser, tenor Don Fernando: James Morris, bass; Don Pizarro: Tom Fox, baritone; Marzelline: Harolyn Blackwell, soprano; Jacquino: Stanford Olsen, tenor; CONDUCTOR: Robert Bass ENSEMBLE: The Collegiate Chorale ORCHESTRA: Orchestra of St. Luke’s at 2pm on WICR.   (See Saturday on Operacast)

and to end the day – a preview of Wagner’s "The Ring" with Speight Jenkins (3 hrs., 6 min.) on KING FM at 10 pm  (See Saturday on Operacast)  NOTE that next week KING starts a four week broadcast of this season’s Seattle Opera’s RING cycle. 

Check out SUNDAY GALA on BBC Radio 3 for a recital of Thomas Hampson and Wolfram Rieger from this year’s Salzburg Festival.   Then the Proms concert on Sunday afternoon is Berg’s Three Pieces for Orchestra and Mahler’s Das klagende Lied.
